A desire to be able to contribute to the community through meaningful work is what drove Dr Brent Skippen to become a doctor.
“Medicine is such a wonderful career, and I feel very fortunate to be a doctor,” Dr Skippen said.
Working from the Riverina Consulting Rooms, he specialises in general ophthalmology, subspecialist eyelid, lacrimal, eye socket, orbital surgery and cosmetic medicine and surgery around the eyes.
For the past three years he has been working full time in Wagga and looks forward to many more.
Before settling in Wagga Dr Skippen gained a vast range of knowledge working in a variety of places including living in Great Britain and then Italy working with world class oculoplastic surgeons for 18 months.
“My wife and eldest two children were with me and we have great family memories of life abroad,” he said.
No matter the location or challenges which arose in different situations he always found his job rewarding.
“I have experienced a variety of working environments, ranging from helping minority groups on Soweto, Johannesburg, to running a tuberculosis clinic in Armenia with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), more recently learning advanced surgical techniques in Europe, and now working with the local community here in the Riverina,” Mr Skippen said.
“Each situation has presented unique challenges, but each situation has been extremely rewarding.”
It’s this passion which makes Dr Skippen dedicated to his patients and their health.
“I am readily available for them, and will always try to achieve the best outcomes for them with the most up-to-date methods,” he said.
Dr Skippen is also involved in shaping the next general of doctors while lecturing at both medical schools in Wagga - University of NSW and Notre Dame, working as an anatomy examiner for the Australian College of Ophthalmology and is a teacher and mentor at the Sydney Eye Hospital.
Dr Skippen will move into new premises at 36 Docker Street on November 26. He is also investing in brand-new state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to optimise patient surgical outcomes.
