Wagga Skyworks committee member Jamie Way said this year will build on the success of last year’s event with live entertainment, great food and a fantastic fireworks show.
“It’s all the best bits of last year and some improvements with the lessons we have learned,” he said. “Some concerns raised were around parking, traffic and access to amenities such as bathrooms. We have now got traffic management involved and we’ve increased the number of facilities.”
Mr Way said anyone who had reservations about attending after last year would be pleased to see they have provided solutions.
“Last year, the Skyworks committee had planned on organising water-based activities, but they had to be cancelled due to the algae on the lake.
“It’s looking like we probably won't get the rainfall needed to do on-water activities this year,” he said. “It still could happen, but it looks like the lake won’t be able to come to the party this year but we will still have plenty of activities and it is still a stunning spot to host the event.”
After the success of last year’s Skyworks spectacular, there was a huge public demand to bring the event back for the second year.
After securing a $50,000 council grant and receiving fireworks approval from Safe Work, Skyworks Spectacular has the all-clear to return.
Wagga resident Sandy Webster attended the 2017 Skyworks and thoroughly enjoyed the festivities.
“It was a really nice relaxed environment and it was nice to see something like this hosted in Wagga,” she said. “We grabbed some chairs, put up our feet up and we had live entertainment which is better than watching it on TV. Wagga is expanding all the time and we are putting the infrastructure in so its important that we have community events as well and it’s one way to bring in new residents.”
Mr Way said it was important for Wagga to have an iconic New Year’s Eve event to bring the community together.
“It’s a symbol of Wagga as a growing city and it makes sense for us to top off the year with an event like Skyworks,” he said. Mr Way said all the proceeds will go to Country Hope this year.
“We want to see charity money raised go to local people and Country Hope is perfect for that,” he said.
