The Greens had been looking at entering the Murray Cup in 2019, but are struggling for numbers, particularly in leaguetag.
President Larry Collins said it looks unlikely to go ahead.
“It doesn’t look good for Murray Cup at this stage,” Collins said.
“We have a few numbers for a first grade squad but our (leaguetag) girls are really letting us down and only one has put their name down on the page.”
Tumbarumba would like to have first grade, leaguetag and under 17s teams in the border based competition, with the under 17s only optional
However Collins wasn’t sure where the club stands ahead of the competition’s annual general meeting this week.
“We’re still looking at the numbers,” he said.
“They’ve invited to their annual general meeting to see where we stand, but at this stage it is not looking promising for Murray Cup.”
Tumbarumba went into recess in January due to a lack of playing numbers and have been exploring their options since then.
Even with a move to the Murray Cup it looks unlikely rugby league games would return to Tumbarumba with the expectation games would be played in Albury and potentially Wangaratta.
“It would be very doubtful,” Collins said of playing home and away games.
“At least not the first year.
“They’ve made it quite clear.”
Benalla are also sounding out interest of going the competition.
In more positive news Tumbarumba have locked in their involvement in the Tumut pub nines early next year.
At this stage there are 22 players in the Tumbarumba team with 25 with Batlow.
Jumpers are currently being ordered for the nines with plans for training to begin next month.
While the numbers are a boost following a season without rugby league for the club, it also leaves Collins pondering why they haven’t been as forthcoming to be part of Group Nine once more.
“The funny thing about it is if we can get 27 or so from Batlow and 22 from Tumba there’s a first and reserve grade squad when you throw a couple of contracted players in,” he said.
“But they are still not interested in going back to Group Nine at this stage.
“It’s funny how the numbers come out for the nines but we can’t get them for Group Nine.”
