Fresh off finishing his HSC, Conlan shot a round of 80 in Saturday’s second round.
He holds a one-shot lead over Max Horsnell whose 78 was the low round of a difficult day on the par-72 course.
“I thought because of the rain the course would’ve been a bit softer and a bit easier to play but the scores didn’t relate to that,” Wagga City Golf Club’s Tim Barlow said.
“The boys said it was a little bit gusty out there. To me, it’s also that word ‘championships’ – it makes the course four shots harder to play!
“It’s going to be pretty tight. There’s still six or seven guys who can win. There’s probably six guys within five shots of the lead."
Kyle Harrison, who was runner-up after a playoff last year, is among those contenders.
He’s four shots off the pace with the final two rounds to be played next Saturday and Sunday.
