Myrniong Jake delivered Williams a belated birthday presence as he took out the Happy Birthday Bruce Williams Maiden (320m) at Wagga on Friday.
After struggling in his first two races, Myrniong Jake jumped straight to the front and from there justified his market support tag.
He never really looked in danger of defeat as the $3.90 chance went on to defeat Temps Itch ($2.70) by more than four lengths.
“It was a good win,” Williams said.
“He tries hard.”
The sentiment wouldn’t have been said about Myrniong Jake before that though after two unplaced efforts to start his career.
However Williams believes he’s been able to correct some less than perfect habits.
“He was a giveaway as he got a ticket for not trying hard,” Williams said.
“But I’ve got him and taught him to try hard – I hope.
“Hopefully it stays in his head.”
Williams said it was a good birthday present.
Starkase Blast also broke her maiden status for Junee trainer Matthew Miller.
After three placings in her first five starts she proved too good for Sycamore Fifi, who has now been placed in her two starts so far.
