The pair are ranked fifth in NSW for their weapon of choice, sabre, off the back of strong national rankings last year and consistent efforts this year. They’ve competed in the other two Olympic disciplines, foil and epee, but choose sabre as their primary weapon.
The Commonwealth titles are on at the end of the month in Canberra, which is a relief for the Wagga pair, easing the burden of travel.
They’ll face a strong field of 34 competitors from Canada, Wales, Scotland, England and New Zealand, as well as Australia.
Smith and Perry hope that their efforts in gaining Australian representation will help inspire others in Wagga to pursue fencing which is regarded as the fastest combat sport on the planet.
