Thomas Glanville, who looks after activity-based management and business intelligence for Wagga Base Hospital, won the Premier’s award for improving service levels in hospitals on Wednesday.
Mr Glanville created an innovative program called ED Now, a dashboard that gives doctors and medical professionals a real-time snapshot of what’s happening in their emergency departments.
His program has now been rolled out across NSW hospitals and is already helping to bring down waiting times in emergency departments.
Mr Glanville said he started working on the project a few years ago.
“I was working with the emergency department team here at Wagga, and we identified that they were spending time every single day on manual processes we could automate to return their time to front line clinical work,” Mr Glanville said.
“Now, every hospital across the entire state now has automated access to real-time visibility of ambulances, patients moving in and out of the emergency departments, and blockages that are stopping them getting to the right location for their treatment.”
Mr Glanville said it was exciting to have his work recognised, but the best part was seeing how his program had delivered real benefits to hospitals around the state.
“For me, one of the take-home messages is that our problems in regional NSW are applicable to everyone and can improve things across the state, not just for the hospitals, but for the patients,” he said.
”That’s what I enjoy doing – helping people solve problems – and, effectively, I get to do a new job every day in the health system, and I enjoy every day of it.”
Murrumbidgee Local Health District chief executive Jill Ludford Mr Glanville’s work marked the first successful state-wide use of electronic medical records for real-time reporting.
“We are immensely proud of Thom, and this award is just recognition for his innovative work,” she said.
“This dashboard is a major advancement in the improvement in patient flow through EDs.”
