Year 10 student Charlotte Nugent received a top award, Grand Champion Parader, in the cattle showing.
Charlotte only met her heifer at the show and had to overcome dealing with an uncooperative cow, so that she could compete successfully.
“The animals are really good at reading your emotions,” she said.
“I made sure I talked calmly to her and she relaxed enough for us to parade successfully together.”
For some the Royal Show is about fun and games, but for the Christian College Cattle Team it is all about the business of showing and caring for the steers which they have been training and looking after since the beginning of the year.
Year 12 student Nicolaas Van Honk competed for the last time in the school’s Cattle Team show events and he took out the Senior Grand Champion Parader award.
“Being part of this group has not only taught me how to work with cattle but I have grown personally through the experience – for success and growth you need to develop skills in presentation, self control, and encouraging the team to work together,” he said.
“The showing of a steer is the result of many students and their consistent work with the animal over a year, it is not simply a matter of parading the steer around the ring on show day.
“I feel very privileged to be part of such a supportive group.”
