About 10am, police began the pursuit on Lake Albert Road but terminated it shortly due to safety concerns.
Wagga Police Detective Inspector Darren Cloake said the men “dumped the car near McNickle Road [Moorong] after a pursuit and swam the river”.
Police officers chased them through farmland before the two men jumped into the Murrumbidgee River.
“We caught one when he turned back, but the other escaped across to the other side,” Detective Inspector Cloake said.
“He [the man arrested] had difficulty in water and turned back where police was waiting.
“The other male escaped to the northern side of the river – an extensive search was conducted but he wasn’t located.”
“We have a good idea who it is and we are currently trying to re-locate him.”
Detective Inspector Cloake said police suspected the man who escaped was connected with the alleged armed robbery at a Mount Austin fuel station on Monday.
Anyone with more information about the incident today is urged to contact Wagga Police station on 6922 2599.
