Taking its name from the famous “Dad and Dave” radio program, the Snake Gully Cup features two days of racing, this year taking place on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 at the Gundagai Racecourse.
Gundagai-Adelong Racing Club secretary Len Tozer said it was a huge social event for the region.
We’re looking forward to having a record crowd.

“We’ve found that most of the neighbouring towns have all their accommodation booked out,” Mr Tozer said. “There is quite a big crowd from the regional towns.
“The corporate marquee is fully booked and the cup marquee is also fully booked so we’re looking forward to having a record crowd.
“The crowd usually sits at 3500 and up towards 4000 people would be at capacity.
“It’s a unique meeting. We have the normal cup events, like fashions on the field.
“The trophy for the Snake Gully Cup is quite unique. It is handmade by a local person and features the concept of the cup, with models of horses racing.”
The weekend will kick off on the Thursday evening with the traditional calcutta held at the Gundagai District Services Club from 7.30pm.
Day one of racing on the Friday is Snake Gully Cup Day, with seven races and gates opening at 11am. Saturday is the Hair of the Dog Day, with another seven races on the cards.
Both race days are full TAB meetings with total prizemoney of $440,000.
“Friday is a is a showcase meeting, meaning prizemoney for each race is at least $30,000,” Mr Tozer said.
“The Snake Gully Cup is $70,000, and there is a $40,000 maiden handicap and a $35,000 flying handicap.
“The feature on the Saturday is the Hair of the Dog Cup, which is a $25,000 race.”
After being terribly rain-affected last year Mr Tozer has his fingers crossed for better weather, although he wouldn’t knock back a bit prior precipitation.
“There is a bit of a lack of water, but the track and grounds are in good condition,” he said.
“We need to ensure the racing surface is in good condition; the owners and trainers like it to be rated a good 4, at least.
“It rained last year on both days. The second day was cancelled due to continuing rain.
“We would love it to rain for the next fortnight, but like it to cut off on the Wednesday or Thursday prior to the event.”
