The earthworks, which included some blasting to shift rock on top of the Wagga landmark, have cleared a flat surface to allow construction of two new reservoirs to begin.
The next stage is to finalise tenders for the construction of the massive new tanks.
Once complete, these will replace the reservoir currently in use on Willans Hill for Wagga’s water supply.
Riverina Water engineering director Bede Spannagle said each one of the new reservoirs would be about 40 metres in diameter and 10 metres high.
An estimated 1400 cubic meters of concrete – or about 3500 tonnes – will be needed to build the two new reservoirs, Mr Spannagle said.
The two new water tanks are expected to be completed in early 2020.
“Our current Willans Hill upgrade will retire the existing open reservoir which is approaching the end of its useful life,” Mr Spannagle said.
“It will be replaced by two new 11 megalitres reservoirs. These new reservoirs will service customers in the central Wagga area.”
