The Vipers recorded wins in the men’s seniors over 30s, women’s seniors over 30s and the girls youth league divisions to finish up affiliate country champions ahead of close rivals Wollongong Devils.
In a men’s seniors over 30s final that saw former St George Illawarra Dragons premiers Jamie Soward (Wagga) and Nathan Fien (Wollongong) face off, the Vipers matched the hype to clinch a tight 4-2 win with Mitch Brown named player of the final.
It was Soward who turned the tables on his former team mate, scoring a key intercept try off a Fien pass that changed the course of the game.
“The game was pretty quick,” Vipers captain Darren Reynoldson said.
“We were fortunate enough to have a few stars in the team who were home grown Wagga players and that was great to play with them, but our new guys also were able to learn from them which has helped our team develop.”
The women’s senior over 30s side recorded a similarly gritty win over Jerrabomberra Storm in their decider with Rachel Addison named player of the final in a 5-3 thriller.
Meanwhile, Ella McFarlane stole the show in the girls youth league as Wagga crushed Ulludulla 10-2 in their final before Vienna Randal and Rhiannon Podmore helped their adopted Wollongong Devils side to a women’s open A title.
