Wagga jockey Nick Heywood landed the second leg of a winning double as Spunlago ($3.40) captured the Bulls-Brothers-Kangaroos League Of Their Own Mile (1600m).
Spunlago has been knocking on the door and broke through for his first win for Stubbs since joining his stable from Archie Alexander.
The seven-year-old finished strongly down the outside to edge out Newtown Bluebag ($6.00) and Danetrille ($9.00) in a photo finish.
Heywood, who was successful earlier on King Caesar ($6.00) for Wayne Carroll, said it was a well-deserved win for Spunlago.
“He’s good enough to win that type of race going off his last three or four runs,” Heywood said.
“It was a good win. I had to go back on him, I didn’t want to go back too far but he got home well. When we got to the front, he actually pulled up a bit.”
Spunlago had run fifth and two fourth placings since joining Stubbs’ stable at Albury.
“Stubbsy’s got him going well. He’s an astute trainer and puts him in the right races,” he said.
King Caesar was ridden a treat by Heywood to claim the Wagga Rugby League Maiden Plate (1300m).
Having his eighth career start, King Caesar eventually wore down Pekna ($5.50) and hit the lead in the shadows of the post.
“He had everything go his way,” Heywood said.
“From barrier three, he box seated and had the run of the race.”
Heywood was happy to walk away with a couple of winners.
“It’s always good to ride one winner, let alone two,” he said.
“It doesn’t always pan out. You’ve just got to get on the right horse at the right time.”
Wagga trainer Trevor Sutherland continued his brilliant start to the new season by landing another winning double.
Sutherland combined with Jon Grisedale for wins with Rising Force ($10.00) and Sweettalkingwilly ($21.00).
Wagga trainer Gary Colvin enjoyed success with Noble Descent ($8.50) returning with a slashing victory in the Rules Club Wagga Benchmark 58 Handicap (1300m).
John Marzol also had Quideem ($51.00) win on debut.
Meantime, Wagga apprentice jockey Heni Ede rode her first winner at Deniliquin on Saturday.
Ede won the Maiden Handicap (1000m) on Reazon ($7.00) for trainer Trevor Miles.
John Pearson and Juana Andreou combined to win the Deniliquin Cup on King’s Hand ($4.00).
