The 130-kilometre Brindabella Road, running between Tumut and Canberra, is a significantly shorter route into Canberra, but as more than 40 kilometres of its surface remain gravel, the trip can take up to three hours.
Extensive works had resulted in a road that was in “magnificent” condition and suitable for any type of car, according to Phil Barton, who is chairman of the Tumut-Batlow Rail Trail Committee and a proponent of major road improvements.

“If ever you wanted the try the Brindabella Road connecting Tumut and Canberra, now is the time to do it,” he said.
Mr Barton believes improving the road could lead to a major tourist influx.
“There are 400,000 people in the ACT who could use it,” he said.
