In a newsletter, Billabong High School’s relieving principal Julie Bowen said it was “with great sadness that I extend condolences on behalf of our school” to Phillip and Nicole Edwards and their daughter, Amelia, on the passing of Hugh.

“I know our school will do all it can to support the Edwards family and friends during this very difficult time,” Ms Bowen said.

John Bance and Son Funeral Home has confirmed that the funeral for Hugh is set for Wednesday, October 24 at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Henty. It will start at 11am.​

“I am sure many of our students and staff will wish to attend to pay their respects to Hugh,” Ms Bowen said.

Students at Billabong High School have been offered counselling, which Ms Bowen said would continue “during the days, weeks and months ahead”.

Ms Bowen also provided information to parents about support-services outside the school to help those impacted by the tragedy.

In a statement, Henty Public School, where Hugh was a year six student in 2017, said it was a “sad event for our local community”.

“Each class took time to think about Hughie and remember him for the fabulous boy that he was,” the statement reads.

“We shared stories about him that made us both laugh and cry.

“He was a fabulous boy who was full of love and great energy – he will be missed greatly.

“We extend our condolences to the Edwards family and are very grateful to know that family, friends and community have rallied around them.”

The school also said that “all donations of food for the funeral would be gratefully accepted”.

Donations may be be left at the Henty Community Centre or Henty Public School from 9am on Wednesday, October 24.

A spokesperson for the NSW Department of Education said Billabong High School students, staff and school community members were saddened by the sudden passing of Hugh Edwards.

“Our thoughts are with Hugh’s family and friends,” the spokesperson said.

“Counselling and support is available...and will be available for as long as needed.”
