The NSWPF’s recruitment branch is set to host a practice session of its physical-capacity test in Wagga on November 11.
Organisers describe it as a ‘try before you buy’ that aims to provide residents with insight into the physical capacity testing day, designed to replicate the physical stresses encountered while being a police officer.
The NSWPF Recruitment Branch’s Senior Sergeant Meg Burke, who’s based at the Parramatta police headquarters, said it was part of their effort to reach as many potential recruits as possible.
“The last time we had it in Newcastle, it was incredibly popular and we had a good turnout,” Senior Sergeant Burke said.
“We’ve had a couple of sessions in Sydney and Dubbo, so it’s about spreading our wings as far as we can, pending resources.”
The physical tests will include hand-grip strength, phone bridge (or plank), vertical jump, push up, agility and multi-stage fitness (or beep test).
Asked about what fitness levels residents need to have prior to doing the sessions, Senior Sergeant Burke said there was no specific value other than having “a consistently good level of fitness”.
“I always say that if you’ve never trained before, you’ve got to put the training in,” she said.
“Our advice is: don’t put in the application then train – train then put the application in.
“We don’t want to see anyone fail.”

The NSWPF also includes a self assessment for anyone interested in participating.
“There’s a multitude of information for what you need to do, including how to train, on our website,” Senior Sergeant Burke said.
“You can also speak to our staff specialised in that area.”
The Wagga event, at 9am–12pm at Wagga PCYC (228 Gurwood Street), is a practice session only and will not be recorded as an official result.
Residents will be provided with important information and an opportunity to gain hands-on practice for each of the tests.
Qualified NSW Police physical training instructors will be on hand to answer test and fitness questions.
Participants will need to bring photo identification and a current GP medical clearance on the day.
The GP medical clearance is valid for only 30 days.
Failure to bring these documents will result in refusal of entry to the event. Please be at the venue by 8.15am for registration. The session will start at 9am.
Organisers remind residents to wear appropriate fitness attire and bring their own food and water as required.
