The 23-year-old was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, and arming himself with a kitchen knife after the August 14 incident.
Police found his wife bloodied and shaking in their front garden after he punched her in the face multiple times and grabbed her around the throat, leaving her struggling to breathe.
He later told police he lashed out because their 18-month-old daughter would not stop crying, saying “I could not tolerate it anymore, so I hit her”.
Magistrate Christopher Halburd adjourned the man’s case on Monday for seven weeks so he could be assessed in his native Burmese, noting it was a particularly “serious assault”.
“I don’t know yet whether the gentleman doesn’t quite understand the law in Australia, but it seems to me we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Mr Halburd said.
