Jaiden James McKelson, 23, was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the incident in the early hours of May 13.
His victim was waiting at the Station Place taxi rank about 3:20am after a night out when McKelson pushed him onto the road before delivering a punch to his jaw.
The whole incident was captured on CCTV footage, which showed the victim stumble backwards in pain after the attack before calling a relative to pick him up.
When he awoke the next morning, he felt extreme pain in his jaw. Scans revealed it was fractured in multiple places, and the victim needed plates and wires inserted during a later surgery in Canberra.
In addition to his community service, McKelson was sentenced to an intensive correction order and ordered to comply with a mental health treatment plan.
