That’s the view of Wagga City Council’s director of commercial operations, Caroline Angel, who believes the MPS has the capacity to host big ticket indoor sporting events
“The recreational team are heavily involved in looking for opportunities where we might be able to encourage teams to come (to Wagga),” Ms Angel said.
“They have a very successful record, so I’m sure we can look forward to some major events.”
Ms Angel’s declaration comes mere days after Wagga City Council’s deal with Cricket NSW to host a Sheffield Shield fixture fell through, however, MPS project manager Tom Lemerle is confident the facility will be ready to host events by 2019.
“The project should be complete by the end of the year,” Mr Lemerle said.
“At this stage, it’s on time and on budget … and there’s been no safety incidences or environmental incidences as of yet.”
The building’s structure has already been established with external cladding, air conditioning and lighting utilities currently being installed.
The $9 million project is being funded with a $4.5m from the federal government with a further $250,000 from Netball Wagga with remaining costs met by Wagga City Council.
Ms Angel said the next milestone would be the installation of spring flooring.
