We hear a lot about “kids today”, and how they are a generation of indulged, entitled snowflakes who are glued to their screens and want life handed to them on a silver platter.

No doubt there are many young people who fit this description, but there are a lot more who don’t and it’s about time they were acknowledged.
Rarely would a week go by that the pages of The Daily Advertiser did not feature at least one story about the achievements of youngster who is doing something extraordinary.
Wagga is blessed to have a lot of young people like Darcie, who care enough to want to do something for others.
We see the determined young sportspeople, the blooming academics and the children who want to give a bit back to the community.
Just a few days ago, The DA featured a front page photo of Darcie Moon, a Wagga High School student who sacrificed her long locks to raise money for breast cancer research.
The 13-year-old has already more than tripled the $1000 goal she set herself, and her efforts are to be commended.
Wagga is blessed to have a lot of young people like Darcie, who care enough to want to do something for others.
None of them is looking for either a pat on the back, or to take a shortcut to success.
There are young people who are willing to devote long hours to hard slog every week because they have their eye on a particular career, or passion for a particular sport.
Last month, The DA spoke to Eliza Anwar, a Wagga dancer who passed a prestigious ballet exam – a goal requiring hours of dedication – while also studying for the HSC and setting her heart on a place at the University of Sydney and a career in environmental science.
There would be hundreds, if not thousands, of young people in Wagga who juggle school, work and sport or hobby commitments every week, and they should be commended for it.
For every entitled, spoiled snowflake, there would be a hard-working teen who has already learned one of life’s most valuable lessons: Hard work, dedication and commitment are essential to having the best shot of getting where you want to go.
