Riverina residents are being encouraged to register for automated alerts about asthma-triggering weather during spring.

The asthma register by CSU Wagga and the COPD Collaborative of Health Professionals helps alert asthmatics and health professionals when there is an increased risk of thunderstorm-triggered asthma.
Alerts are sent via SMS and/or emails on days with high-risk conditions, particularly with elevated levels of airborne grass-pollens with pending thunderstorm activity.
Dr Bruce Graham, adjunct lecturer at CSU Wagga’s School of Biomedical Sciences, encouraged asthmatic residents to sign up during this period.
“We've identified the end of September to November as
“During spring, historical evidence suggests that it’s related to high pollen counts and thunderstorms events,” Dr Graham said.

“We try to get people with family history to register with our site to receive 12–24hrs notice to be aware of symptoms, which can hit you pretty quickly.
“It’d help residents get their asthma plans ready – for example, to keep puffers close and avoid being outdoors.”
The automatic notification system has been running for about a decade with nearly 2000 residents signing up.
