Despite its absence for the past three years, the regular biannual Warbirds Down Under aviation showcase on October 12 and 13, will likely attract up to 25,000 spectators to the Riverina town.

“That we know of, we have people coming from New Zealand, the US, and all over Australia to be there,” said Temora Aviation Museum chief executive Murray Kear.

Combining the museum’s fleet of historic crafts with restored planes from all over the country consistently places the event as the largest warbird show in the southern hemisphere.

Everything from early World War II planes to currently serving F/A Hornets will fly overhead.

“The early planes are rather basic compared to the modern ones,” said Mr Kear.

“There’s not a lot of comfort in the fabric covered Tiger Moths, for example, especially when you look at the current models that are very much tech heavy.”

Of particular pride to the museum is the two 1940s era semi-monocoque spitfires. 

The last acquired by the Royal Australian Air Force, the planes are now the nation’s last in operation. 

“Our pilots have all come from different backgrounds, some are RAAF, commercial, or agricultural pilots, but they’ve all had thousands of hours operating different types of planes,” said Mr Kear.

“We’re very particular about who can fly our planes.

“The spitfires are single seat, so it tends to be the pilot’s first solo flight. They’re definitely not something you could fly straight after getting your pilot’s licence.”

The showcase will also feature a recently restored Hawker Hurricane 5481, on loan from Scone.

But owing to the length and width of Temora’s runway, the larger Boeing planes, Globemaster and Wedgetail will only fly over on their way to a bigger airport.

“There’s a pretty large variation on offer because everyone has different tastes and preferences,” said Mr Kear.

“For those who like the noisy jets, there will be some, for those who love the historic crafts, there’s those as well, and there’s even a bit for those who want the modern planes too.”
