Officers from the Riverina Police District and Turvey Park Fire and Rescue arrived at the Bourke Street home about 5am to find a Holden Commodore and a Mitsubishi Pajero alight.
Riverina Police District inspector Peter McLay said the owners were home at the time and woken up by the sound of their car alarms.
“Whenever fires are lit in close proximity to dwellings, they may spread to the dwelling, but fortunately Fire and Rescue did a good job of ensuring that didn’t occur,” Inspector McLay said.
“As a result of the fire, those two vehicles have been destroyed, and police are still investigating the scene and circumstances, however we suspect that the fire was suspicious.”
Inspector McLay said he and his team did not believe the incident was related to the recent spate of car fires that have swept the city.
“Police are investigating the circumstances, including whether the occupants may have some enemies or whether this indeed was a targeted attack,” he said.
