An estimated 90 per cent of people being discharged from the hospital need to stop by the pharmacy to organisation medication requirements before they leave.
Of course, the hospital’s in-patients must be tended to as well and GPs need to be kept informed of any changes to a patient’s medication.
The hospital pharmacy is a busy spot. There are 10 full-time pharmacists positions – filled by a range of part and full-time staff, with an additional four technician roles, and well as a purchasing officer.
The needs vary too, with units from medical and surgical to rehabilitation, mental health and the Hospital at Home all relying on the pharmacy to assist patients with their medication needs.
The staff certainly had plenty to celebrate on Tuesday’s World Pharmacy Day.
