There wasn't exactly a record crowd in attendance to see Advanced Communication Cobras open their season against Rock Solid Gear Wizards on Field One and reigning champions MJR Electrics dance with Quolls on Field Two.
However, the opening round was a quality affair with plenty of tries scored.
In the game of the round, Electrics found themselves on the wrong end of 10-9 scoreline to Quolls.
The two sides went into half time locked a 4-all and things look set to improve for Electrics after an early second half try saw them reclaim the lead.
However, Quolls weren't to be denied as key duo Cade Price and Callum Price steered the spots around the paddock.
Not even a hat-trick from Callum Polsen was enough to keep the defending premiers afloat as Quolls held out for an upset victory.
In the other game, Cobras managed to reel in a fast start from Wizards to notch a 10-7 victory.
There's no such thing as pre-season for us, we kind of just get into it and that was our first real hit out of the season.
- Cobras co-coach Andrew Baggio
Cobras co-coach Andre Baggio was impressed by the early performances from both sides.
"it was pretty fast-paced and a pretty good game," Baggio said.
"Darren Reynoldson has been recruiting a heap of good young kids and we've got a few new faces in the team.
"Guys like Patrick Voss are going really well - he's a star of the future - and others like Tristan Wheeler and Luke Lawrence are looking really good."
In typical first round fashion, defence and communication were the primary concerns with a grand total of 36 touch downs registered across the two games.
"There's no such thing as pre-season for us, we kind of just get into it and that was our first real hit out of the season," Baggio said.
"It always seems to be a high-scoring game, that first game of the season. It's pretty good if you get to 10 or so and only leak four or five points in those kind of games.
"But yeah, Wizards were strong and fast and they'll be a good side this year.”
