Tick paralysis is a potentially devastating condition that can affect dogs and cats and is caused by a parasite.
Dr Andrea Barnard from Wagga Veterinary Hospital said if this condition goes untreated it can be fatal as the pet’s respiratory areas become paralysed.
“We don’t have the paralysis tick in Wagga, it’s a coastal tick, however pet owners should have protection in place for when people are visiting from the coast,” Dr Barnard said.
“The main thing is daily searching through their pet’s coat and also being aware that visitors can carry the paralysis tick through their luggage and vehicle.”
Owners should take their pet straight to the vet if ticks are found to ensure all ticks are removed, otherwise use proper tick removals.
