The council approved $15,000 sponsorship, through its 2018–19 major events–sponsorship budget, for the event.

The news has been welcomed by event organiser Holly Conroy, who said it was “amazing when I got confirmation from council”.

“It’s great that council is getting right behind and supporting such an amazing event, which will benefit so many people,” Miss Conroy said.

She said that while details about how the funding will be distributed are not yet finalised, it would be used to help cover costs.

“There’s a lot of costs involved so funding will cover some of that,” she said.

Miss Conroy, one of Wagga’s most open transgender women, has been planning the event for the past 3–4 months and said she was “quietly confident that it would be approved”.

“But whether or not it was, the event was going to go ahead,” she said.

“The grant makes it smoother and it’d make the event bigger and better.”

She said she was thankful and appreciative of the support from the council.

“I’ve met with councillors and they’ve been really excited, who are right behind the idea.”

The event’s website is due for launch in October.

Wagga Mayor Greg Conkey said the event would be a positive way to “bring the community together”.

“It’s going to be good for the city,” Cr Conkey said.

“I’ve spoken with the organiser and others involved, who were very keen to bring it here.

“I’m sure it would be well supported and my wife and I hope to be marching down the street next year.”

Application for the council sponsorship funding was applied by ACON Health, the auspice organisation of the event.

At the Monday meeting, the council also approved $10,000 for Gamma.con, a pop-culture festival.
