There has been no more fitting win on a regional harness racing track for many years as Rebecca’s mother Judy is the trainer of Sofire Girl, while her uncle Bruce Harpley, drove the horse to victory in the $10,000 feature.
Rebecca’s father Trevor said they had been trying to win the race since its inception following Rebecca’s death in a car accident nine years ago.
Wearing Rebecca’s former race colours, Harpley gave Sofire Girl full rein at the 500 metres and the mare responded for a tearaway victory.
“This win means everything to us with all of Bec’s family and friends here,” Trevor Rutland said.
“The horse has grown in confidence and has been able to put together some really good runs.
“We always try and have a horse for Bec’s race and this time it worked out perfect.
“I have to thank Bruce a lot because Sofire Girl goes well for him and he drove her how she had to be
driven.”
Harpley has driven feature winners across Australia and was literally lost for words afterwards.
“I’m speechless. This win means a lot to the family – everything,” he said.
Harpley’s winning flurry with the whip as he surged to the finish line and the call of race broadcaster Allan Hull perfectly summed up the emotion charged moment.
Adding to the emotion Judy was on track as she battles cancer.
Meanwhile, the odds were massive again as Lettucefireharvey took out the Don Alchin Memorial.
One year and one week after recording his previous victory at triple figure odds, Lettucefireharvey did it again paying in excess of $100 for the win on the NSW TAB.
Trainer-driver Len Clement was glad to see Lettucefireharvey win again.
“I don’t care about the price as long as he won,” Clement said.
One punter thought something of the big odds, collecting several thousand dollars after having an interest bet in the final race.
