Sykes announced his retirement after the Demons’ two point grand final win over Griffith.
It was the perfect day the 30-year-old, who coached Collingullie-GP’s reserve grade team to a premiership earlier on Saturday.
“I’ll help the boys out in the magoos if they need but my first grade days are done,” Sykes said.
“I’m emotionally drained now but it’s been a ripping day. I couldn’t have imagined this in my wildest dreams at the start of the year when I put my hand up to do the magoos.
“For the boys to talk me into having another crack at first grade was great, it’s obviously paid full dividends now.”
Saturday’s triumph was Sykes’ sixth first grade premiership at the club. During that time, he has been club captain.
