Levels of per-fluoroalkyl and poly-fluoroalkyl substances – commonly referred to as PFAS – were detected in the effluent earlier this year, following an investigation into chemical spread from RAAF Base Wagga.
The Department of Defence this month confirmed the highly persistent and environmentally harmful chemicals were leaching from the air force base into the sewerage works.
Wagga City Council’s general manager Peter Thompson this week said the concentration had been found to exceed safe screening levels.
Defence are working with council to implement a solution before the plant reaches capacity. With about 400 days remaining, Mr Thompson said he was hopeful a meeting next week would reveal a potential fix.
