The initial reaction by a medical adviser in Queensland urging people to discard fruit was ridiculous and was, unfortunately, taken up with gusto by a range of media outlets.

The advice to cut up fruit is a bit late now for those growers who have lost sales and have been forced to let their crop rot. Sensationalism will only encourage copycat actions. Increasing penalties will not do much if the guilty people are not found.

I urge people to buy strawberries and just cut them up, the growers need our support.

Regarding the vessel sailed by Cook ("Cook's Endeavour may be found", Daily Advertiser, Sept 20), to call it "HMS Endeavour" is technically incorrect.

Launched as a collier in 1764, Endeavour was commissioned into the RN in 1768 specifically for Cook's southern voyage, as "HM Bark Endeavour".

A bark is not as large as a ship - it's like calling a bus a coach; and whether Cook was a lieutenant (his rank at the time) or a lieutenant acting as captain is also a moot point.

As a general safety tip though, it would be unwise to pursue either argument in a pub down at the docks.

What appalling behaviour from Serena Williams and how selfish of her to spoil her opponent’s moment of special victory by throwing such an unforgivable childish tantrum, which was totally uncalled for.

The umpires decisions were correct her coach was caught out on TV (in the act) yet she persisted he didn’t coach her.

The umpire owes her nothing, she owes him an apology plus viewers around the world and the spectators who “paid” to watch a game of tennis (not a slinging match) to get attention (of the wrong kind).

Her reputation as a player held in high esteem has stopped down to as low as it can, the world is disappointed with such an unfavourable “example” to have set for up and coming future tennis players worldwide - whatever must they be thinking.

As for the cartoon - it was taking the mickey out of all celebrities who just “take it in their stride with a sense of humour”.

Getting other “somebodies” on side to reinforce the peddling of it suggests political correctness worldwide “gone as crazy as it gets”.

Bring on more cartoons, let’s get over the sensitivity offence nonsense and grow up on the tennis court.

Incidentally the fine wasn’t anywhere near enough as a suspension to play anywhere in the world for a reasonable amount of time is what is needed.
