At 60 years of age, the Wagga Brothers assistant treasurer and registrar can create history if he is to become one of the oldest player to win a division one men’s hockey premiership.
Purcell answered the club’s call when the previous keeper did not return this season, to step up to the top division.
For many seasons prior, ‘Purce’ has played in reserve divisions for Harlequins teams and filled up on the odd occasion when the regular keeper has been unavailable.
With most players half his age, Purcell managed play 14 games at the highest level after nursing himself back from injury in the middle of year.
His teammate, teenage sensation, Riley Makeham won the David Mumford Memorial Trophy last weekend is almost a quarter of his age at just 16.
