PCYC regional manager Brett Somerville said this was the reason the war hero was invited to be keynote speaker for the fundraising gala dinner in Wagga this month. 

According to the his biography, Corporal Donaldson had been a self-described ratbag, before he became a soldier. 

Years later, he would be awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for Australia and named Young Australian of the Year. 

Corporal – formerly Trooper – Donaldson was part of the Special Air Service Regiment when he risked his life to protect injured troops and rescue an interpreter, during the Battle of Khaz Oruzgan in Afghanistan. 

For these heroic actions, the young man was in 2009 presented with the most distinguished military decoration for bravery in wartime. He was given one of the countries top titles the following year and later promoted.

Mr Somerville said the corporal’s story, in addition to the city’s strong military ties made him the perfect guest for the Gala. 

“His story really resonated with what we’re trying to achieve here at the centre,” Mr Somerville said. 

“We wanted to identify someone inspiring, who was a bit different to who the kids normally see.”

He said money raised from the event on Wednesday, September 26, would help fund major PCYC projects, and support Wagga youth. 

Tickets are still available for the gala dinner, which will be held at the Rules Club from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.
