The Young skipper has been among the competition’s best for two seasons running and was awarded Football Wagga’s highest honour as Player of the Year in 2017.
However, Cameron’s dual registration with Wagga City Wanderers and the Lions saw him banned from playing in this year’s Pascoe Cup finals.
It’s the same conundrum that saw dual-registered talents Prince Thompson and Tyler Allen sidelined during Wagga United’s two-game finals stint and Cameron has made no secret of his disappointment at not being able to join his team mates in a fairy tale grand final appearance.
“I hate it,” Cameron said.
“It’s really tough to sit out but it’s so good for the boys to be in the decider.”
The midfield cannon handed the captaincy to Brad Galvin at the start of Young’s finals campaign and has since adopted an assistant role alongside 2018 Coach of the Year Mark Mellish.
Cameron’s short stint with the clipboard has coincided with a pair of gritty Lions’ wins, including last weekend’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Henwood Park, and he’ll be hoping for a perfect three from three when their team bus pulls into Equex Centre and takes to the field against Lake Albert on Sunday.
“I don’t mind being there helping out at training and I’ll be doing whatever I can this week,” Cameron said.
“Beating Henwood Park was unreal … but it’s going to be a different game again this weekend and we need to be ready.”
