Turvey Park firefighters were called to the Edward Street end about 9:30pm when an electrical fault in a fridge caused a fire to break out in the unit, which sits above a vacant shopfront.
Police were also called in to shut down the street so the firefighters could safely access the water they needed to help extinguish the blaze.
Turvey Park Fire and Rescue station officer Jeff Edwards said the residents had to evacuate the unit and seek emergency accommodation somewhere else until the cause of the fault could be properly investigated.
“As much as the smoke damage around the premises wasn’t too bad, it’s just the fact that there could be damage to the wiring that couldn’t be investigated at that time,” Mr Edwards said.
“It all took a couple of hours, and we finished by completing what we call a 360 – a walk around the building – just to ensure there were no other premises affected by the fire.”
The residents were given the all-clear by paramedics, who were also called to the scene to make sure nobody had suffered from smoke inhalation.
A proper investigation into what caused the fault is unlikely to happen before Monday.
