It capped a brilliant first season at the club for the Bombers’ leading goalkicker.
“Oh mate, it’s unbelievable, I never thought I’d get here,” Walgers said. “It’s just amazing. Great feeling. Love it.”
His three contributions were at critical moments, with Walgers’ first coming late in the second term after North Wagga had evened the scores through a Daniel Jordan goal.
That was Marrar’s only goal from a set shot all day. Walgers then swooped on two oppportunities in three minutes in the third term, turning a two-point lead into 14 and setting them on a path towards victory.
“It was just something else. You always dream about kicking a goal in a grand final and to kick two in the space of five minutes – it was pretty awesome,” he said.
With 37 goals in 18 games, Walgers made a massive contribution at Marrar. He was one of only four players to play every game and was in their best in half of them.
In a season when John Hoey and Brad Turner were hampered by injury, he was a reliable presence up forward and a consistent headache for opposition teams, going goalless in only three games.
“Dangerous. He’s had a good year as well,” coach Shane Lenon said in admiration.
