The Bombers dominated the reserve grade grand final early at Robertson Oval on Saturday before holding off a Saints comeback to take a 8.8 (56) to 4.10 (34) victory.

It was the perfect finish for coach Jarrod Gornall and a host of teammates set to hang up the boots.

He was pleased to hang on.

“We dropped off a little bit and let them come back, which we knew they would,” Gornall said.

“Our first half was really good, we did a lot of work in the first half to set it up.

“We knew we had that wind coming into the last quarter, and it is pretty strong out here, so for them to kick four or five goals in the last was always going to be tough.”

There was little between the two teams in the first quarter with Matt Malone’s fourth minute goal the only major for the quarter.

Leading by five points at quarter-time, the Bombers turned it on heading into the strong breeze.

Goals to Chris Butt, Tim Pattison and Sam Turner had the Bombers out by 24 points at the long break.

Things continued to fall Marrar’s way early in the third quarter when Malone then Dean Howard goaled off a free kick.

However the Saints got on the board through Josh May and it seemed to spark them.

Quick goals to Tom Gaynor and Matt Harmer gave North Wagga momentum heading into the last quarter.

They got within 13 points when Dean Ward scored two minutes into the quarter however Charlie Youngman scored a crucial goal late to give the Bombers some much needed breathing space as they held on for the win.

Gornall said it was a special way to go out.

After an injury plagued season, Shannon Williams was named best on in the grand.
