The application is to “increase to heavy vehicle movements from six to 12 heavy vehicle movements between the hours of 3pm and 5:00pm” on McNickle and Roach roads.
The proposal is currently on public exhibition and submissions can be made.
The quarry, located between the Murrumbidgee River and Sturt Highway about seven kilometres west of Wagga’s CBD, employs six operators and one manager and is run by Hanson Construction Materials.
Hanson graduate environmental planning and compliance co-ordinator Belinda Pignone said the quarry had sought to modify its truck restrictions to better serve its customers at the times they needed its products.
“The quarry has a community consultation committee, and that is how we communicate with the local residents,” she said.
“There was one concern and that was when we initially were going to apply for hours between 3pm and 6pm.
“They said from 5pm everyone was home and wanted to enjoy their evenings, so we changed it from 3-6pm to 3-5pm.”
Ms Pignone said total truck movements per day were expected to remain the same as the quarry cannot transport more than 150,000 tonnes of product from the site per calendar year.
Hanson is based in Parramatta and is part of the German multinational corporation HeidelbergCement group, which employs 57,000 people worldwide and has a market value of $24 billion.
Hanson stated in its application that it had notified the NSW Roads and Maritime Services of its proposed modifications and the agency had asked to see the Environmental Assessment documentation.
The company behind the quarry also stated it had contacted Wagga City Council via email on two occasions and had received no response.
“Council was made aware of the proposed modification from the applicant,” a Wagga City spokesperson told The Daily Advertiser.
“If council was looking to make any submissions in relation to the application it would be made direct to the Department of Planning and Environment as the determining body during the public exhibition stage.”
