Kooringal High School are girls’ hockey premiers once again after clinching the Combined Wagga High Schools Sports Association championships in an extra-time thriller against Wagga High School.

The Kooringal girls went neck and neck with their Wagga High counterparts and couldn’t be split at the final whistle with the score locked at 2-all.
Kooringal captain Kalee Gibbons was a leading light during the game, scoring both goals for her side as a shoot-out loomed.
The match went to run-ins with Gibbons, Chelsie McEwan and Kate Fleming keeping their cool and converting to snatch a 3-2 win after the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Tegan Eastwood was a standout in the decider, drawing praise from Kooringal boys’ coach Angela Baker.
“She was under a lot of pressure at the end and she really stepped up,” Baker said.
“Kymie McEwan was our vice captain and she was great as well.”
Kooringal High’s boys team then completed a hockey double after taking out their decider.
The yellow team saw off a spirited challenge from The Riverina Anglican College to emerge 3-2 victors at Jubilee Park.
Vice-captain George Kendall was a standout for the winning side, slotting the Kooringal’s first goal before nailing the decisive shot in the second half to give his team the goal advantage.
Captain Jaleel Bond was terrific across the field while Jack Bryce shyone with a crucial second half goal.
Kooringal coach Angela Baker said it was a “very exciting game to watch”.
“The last couple of minutes were a little bit nervy but we got there,” Baker said.
“Michael Driscoll was the goalie for the boys and I thought he played a key role in saving a number of goals.”
A first-time coach, Baker is keen to stay on next season.
“The last time the boy and girls won both trophies was 2001, (so) it’s a terrific achievement from the hockey teams,” she said.
