The Wawi Festival, Wagga’s very own celebration of NAIDOC Week 2018, started with a casual ‘yarn up’ at the Marrambidya Wetlands.
People from all around Wagga gathered at the brand new site to share a cup of tea, a bite to eat, and, most importantly, a good yarn about community and culture.
Wawi Festival committee member Ash Pengelly said Sunday was all about getting together as one community.
“Today’s event was just something super casual, some Johnny cakes on the fire pit, some cups of tea, a few elders around, and just introducing people to this site,” Ms Pengelly said.
“Whether it’s for cultural education, to give back to the community, to show your appreciation for Aboriginal people in the community doing some great stuff, or just to take part in your local culture – come along this week.”
Ms Pengelly said the theme of NAIDOC 2018 – because of her we can – would carry strong throughout the week’s celebrations.
“We want to celebrate all the hard work Aboriginal women do in our community, whether it be with welcomes, art workshops, or storytelling sessions at our day cares – this is our chance to give back to them,” she said.
Still to come this week is a high tea, a cultural tour of Wagga, and even a glitzy ball.
