The Riverina Lions midfielder was named as best and fairest in AFL Canberra women’s division two.
In her second season with the club, the 33-year-old claimed a two-vote win over Molonglo’s Emma Darman.
Oates thought being able to commit more helped her claim the prize
“I think I’ve had a pretty good year football wise and it’s probably the first year I’ve been able to get away to most games,” Oates said. “With work it is pretty challenging.”
Riverina Lions will host a preliminary final next Sunday.
They’ve lost just the once this season and Oates believes they are building at the right time of the year.
“We’ve started to come together right at the right time,” she said.
Oates is one of six members in the side in the army and she thanked the support of her battalion, and the personal interest Kapooka chief Mick Garraway has taken in the side, for making the season possible.
