The Lions announced on Thursday that Barrett was one of five players delisted by the club.
Barrett, 22, managed five games for the Lions this year after playing 17 in 2017.
Barrett spent two seasons at Brisbane after being delisted by Greater Western Sydney at the end of the 2016 season.
He played one AFL game for the Giants in 2015.
Rohan Bewick, Claye Beams, Tom Bell and Marco Paparone were the other four players delisted by the Lions.
Brisbane Lions general manager of football David Noble said it was a difficult decision to let the players go.
“All have contributed to the growth and improvement of our Club both on and off the field,” Noble told the Lions website.
“It is unfortunate to let great men go. We wish them well for what lies ahead in their future.
“The Club will continue to provide support and direction for the players in this transitional phase.”
Barrett kicked 19 goals from his 22 games at the Lions.
