Leeton Public School claimed back-to-back Trent Barrett Shield titles after a win over Gundagai Public in the final at Paramore Park on Tuesday. The defending champions got off to a brilliant start when Solomon Liu scored in the opening minute and from there were never headed. They led 16-8 at half-time but Gundagai never gave up and kept responding to tries from the Leeton side before falling 24-20. Coach Scott McDonald was pleased with the team’s performance. “It was nice to go back-to-back,” McDonald said. “A lot of these boys stayed back after being part of last year’s win so I had a fair bit of confidence in them.” McDonald wanted to take a small but speedy team who defended well into the competition and it worked well.
