A day short of his 35th brithday, Willis went out on a premiership high as Gundagai proved too good for Southcity on Saturday.
And what a role he played too.
His hand helped Gundagai to their first try, as he flicked a Blake Dunn kick back for Dylan Cole, and set the team on a path to just their second premiership in their last 13 grand final appearances.
He was thrilled to play his part in the try.
“I nicked it just and nearly broke my back diving for the ball, but it is a fantastic way to finish my footy career,” Willis said.
“I love this town, what they have done for me and my family and I’m just proud to be a Tige.”
Hanging up the boots 18 seasons since his debut for Junee, he couldn’t have asked for much more.
“I’m just full of emotion at the moment,” Willis said.
“I just can’t believe we’ve knocked them off.
“It is unbelievable.”
