Due to be finished by 2020, the complex will feature new mountain bike and running paths, a new BMX track, a cycling education area, mountain bike playground, a new velodrome and new car parking and barbecues.
The state government on Friday announced it will contribute $6.29m project, with Wagga City Council making up the balance.
David Reid, the president of mountain bike group MTB Wagga, said the announcement was welcome news.
He said members of his club and other cycling groups in the city had been working on getting the complex built for some years.
“It’s going to be great,” Mr Reid said.
“It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
“We were expecting only partial funding, but we got all of it.”
Mr Reid said once the complex was finished, it would be the new home of cycling in Wagga, with plans including the construction of cycle paths from the city to Pomingalarna.
“With the velodrome being built out there, cycling won’t have to compete with cricket or football any more,” he said.
Construction of the project will be the responsibility of Wagga City Council.
Funding for the project was announced on Friday by Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who was in Wagga with Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres and Liberal candidate for the Wagga byelection, Julia Ham.
Wagga Mayor Greg Conkey said the complex will would for everything from serious competition to recreational riders.
“Wagga City Council has been working with our local cycling community for the past five years and through the NSW Government’s contribution of $6.92m and Council’s funding of $2.3m we can now make this exciting project a reality,” he said.
“The multisport cycling complex will have a unique combination of on and off-road cycling and non-cycling facilities and will inject up to $11.7m into the local economy each year.”
