The Chris Heywood-trained gelding accumulated 56 points, surviving King Of Sting’s challenge to claim $10,000 in bonuses for his connections.
King Of Sting finished runner-up in the $25,000 Riverina Cup (3800m) at Wagga on Sunday, doubling his series point-score in the process.
Triple points for the Riverina Cup provided King Of Sting with a 27-point haul, taking his total to 54.
Sir Ottavio earnt 15 points for running sixth in the Riverina Cup and ended up third with 46.
Run Hoff Run (44 points), Go Get ‘Em (43 points) and Big Haz (42 points) featured prominently in the series, which ran from October last year through to Sunday’s feature event.
Heywood was relieved his decision to scratch Monsoon Charlie from the Riverina Cup did not cost him the series.
“It’s super to win the series,” Heywood said.
“Once he got some points early on and he was going good come the middle of the year we decided to set him to try and win it.”
Monsoon Charlie’s efforts provide Heywood with a $5000 windfall, while his owners receive the same amount.
Heywood shares the ownership with Ron and Lorraine Fitzgibbon.
