Riverina residents who have immigrants as friends, workmates, family or significant others, or are immigrants themselves, can rightly react with horror at Senator Fraser Anning’s speech on Tuesday.

Katter’s Australian Party Senator Anning, formerly of One Nation, appeared to do his best during his maiden speech to eclipse Pauline Hanson’s notorious effort in 1996.
Back then, Hanson warned Australia would be “swamped by Asians”.
Now, Anning has replaced Asians with all non-European or Muslim persons, and added a deeply disturbing reference to the Nazi Holocaust of millions of people from Jewish and other minority groups.
Anning praised the White Australia Policy and called for a plebiscite as “the final solution to the immigration problem”.
It cannot have escaped Anning that he was echoing the Nazi SS “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”.
Anning wants to turn back the clock to 1901, when officials blocked immigrants based on the colour of their skin under the pretense of English language tests.
Anning claims the Prime Minister Gough Whitlam dismantled the policy without consulting the people of Australia.
In fact, the policy was partially dismantled by acts of Parliament brought forth by two proceeding Liberal-Country Party governments.
Wagga has welcomed Yazidi families from the Iraq and Syria region, who fled ISIS terrorists attempting no less than a genocide of their people.
There are also refugee communities from Iraq, Iran, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Nepal and Vietnam living in the region.
Few would have been accepted under Anning’s ‘European immigration’ regime.
Wagga will depend on overseas migration to hit a growth target of 100,000 people by 2038.
There have been reasoned debates over population growth in Australian cities as we hit 25 million people.
But a race, culture, skin-colour or religion-based immigration policy would be a gigantic and shameful step backward.
