Lions captain Ben Walsh says securing a double chance in finals is their goal and their last home game, against a team one win below them, might just do the job.

“I guess we haven’t consolidated third spot, that’s our initial aim at the moment,” Walsh said.

The Lions are two points clear of Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes (whose run home is Turvey Park, Griffith, bye) and four ahead of the Crows (who play GGGM, Coolamon, Turvey Park).

They have the bye next week before a final round derby at Coolamon and Walsh said – apart from the ladder – they’re focussed on building towards finals.

 “The main thing we’re working on is our pressure. That what wins you games, trying to hit our tackle number each week, which we’ve been doing,” he said.

“I guess with the potential wet, the pressure acts and those tackles are going to be really important.”

Walsh has been named at centre-half-forward. He said they’re keen to mix things up before finals while defender James Wilson’s form means he’ll likely have the job on Crows forward Daniel Muir. 

“We’re just trying a few new things coming into finals. We’ve got James Wilson back and he’s more of a natural defender,” Walsh said. “He played his best game last week so I’m confident he’ll get the job on Muir.”

GGGM, who have won their last four games, beat the Crows by two goals at Leeton earlier in the year. Muir was kept to one, while Riley Corbett booted seven for the Lions. 

They will be without Josh Walsh (unavailable) while Scott Proctor (hamstring) is no certainty to play.

The Crows have James Nancarrow and Isaac Houghton back but Bryce O’Garey hasn’t been named.
