But RSL Sub-Branch president Harry Edmonds conceded “these things happen”.
It follows the temporary extinguishing of the Eternal Flame at Victory Memorial Gardens.
Mr Edmonds said the fire was a reminder of the sacrifices made in the service of country, but it was only symbolic.
“It is never supposed to go out,” Mr Edmonds said. “But if it needs to be fixed, it needs to be fixed.”
The symbolic flame has been intermittently lit across a number of weeks, amid maintenance works at the gardens.
Council could not confirm when works would be completed.
In its weekly newsletter, council said it was not the first time the flame had gone out and would not be the last.
