Very few people probably thought they would be put to use as creatively as this.

Dwayne Nicholls from Project Paintball is now the proud owner of about 170 old recycling bins and said he has every intention of purchasing many, many more very soon.

“We like to update our fields fairly frequently to give people something new to come and try out, so the plan is to use the bins to replace our old trenches field,” Mr Nicholls said.

“I’m thinking of calling it ‘Fort Trash’ – there’ll be a fortress of bins at one end and there’ll maybe be a village or a town made of bins you have to get through to attack the fortress.” 

Mr Nicholls hopes to have the new field ready around late August or early September and said there’d also be a few surprises in there for players.

“There’s actually some bins that people have spray-painted or carved their addresses into, so hopefully some people might actually be able to spot their old bins out there,” he said. 

Mr Nicholls originally went to council to try and get some old bins, but they rejected his application.

In the end, he said was able to buy the bins for a good price from Kurrajong Recyclers, who are responsible for breaking the bins down so they can be made into brand new bins. 

Kurrajong’s manager Craig Salan it was great to see the paintballers give some old bins a new life.

“I think it’s great – if you can reuse something that normally would have been thrown out to the tip, good on you, and more people should be having a look at what they can do to reuse things,” Mr Salan said. 

“For the rest of the bins, we strip the wheels and axles off, they get shredded through a big granulating machine, and they’re put into what we call bulker bags to get sent back to the factory for recycling – so they’re actually turned into new bins and will come back in a second or third life.”

Mr Salan and his team are also about to start collecting some 2700 industrial bins to begin recycling and reissuing those around Wagga as well.
